14 Exclusive Makeup Tips for Older Women from Professional Makeup Artists

When I first met Ariane Poole over six years ago, I knew she had an empowering message to share with our community. Her emphasis on active aging is refreshing, and her practical makeup tips are exactly what our community needs.

Who is Ariane Poole?

Ariane Poole is a celebrity makeup artist. She works with women of all ages to help them discover the beauty of makeup and use clever makeup techniques to look and feel their best. She is passionate about active anti-aging rather than anti-aging.
According to Ariana, modern makeup formulas and techniques can be used to highlight your best features and manage any small areas you feel need a little boost!

Start with healthy skin

Cleansing, exfoliating and protecting your skin is crucial to getting the makeup look you want at any age, says Ariana. Keeping your skin healthy also provides a good foundation for makeup.
She points out that you can spend all the money in the world on expensive foundations, eyeshadows and concealers, but if you don’t keep your skin healthy, they’re useless. This is especially important as you age.

Here are Ariane’s top 14 beauty tips for older women

Ariane has come up with these simple tips over her years of experience and says they are perfect for us mature women.

#1: Use a primer

A primer evens out your skin tone and fixes a light foundation. Consider using a tinted primer, which combines the benefits of a primer, moisturizer and foundation.
Lancôme’s PREP & HYDRATE PRIMER is a luminous primer that plumps and hydrates the skin for a radiant glow.
Prime Time BB Primer-Cream Daily Defense from Bare Minerals has a BB cream-like color tone. It also has SPF 30.

#2: Use a lightweight foundation

Don’t use heavy foundation creams or powders as they create an unnatural, fake look. Instead, use a lightweight, luminous foundation for a more natural look.

Simply Ageless +Olay Foundation is the perfect combination of Covergirl and Olay. This foundation with moisturizers and vitamin C evens out skin tone. Hyaluronic acid provides firming moisturization.

#3: Use a foundation brush

Use a foundation brush instead of a sponge to apply your foundation. It will give you better coverage and longer lasting results.
Wonder Cover Complexion Brush is a foundation brush from EcoTools that is perfect for foundation and foundation creams.

#4: Use Concealer After Foundation

If you prefer to use foundation, then make sure to use concealer after your foundation and not before. This way you can apply concealer exactly where you need it and use less product. And it looks more natural.

#5: Apply concealer in the right places

Apply concealer above your cheekbones, not under your eyes. This will allow the light to reflect upwards and cover any dark circles that may be present. Look straight ahead in the mirror. Now tilt your chin down and look into the mirror. This will highlight the dark circles and help to apply concealer in the right place.

#6: Deepen Dark Circles with Concealer

When trying to lighten age spots, use a concealer that is slightly darker than you think you need. Remember, applying a light colored concealer to dark spots won’t work and will make them look gray.

#7: Blend Concealer Shades to Cover Discoloration

After applying your favorite foundation, blend shades from a concealer palette such as the Graftobian HD Glamour Creme Palette to match your natural skin tone. Apply only to areas that need extra coverage.

#8: Shape your brows naturally with this trick

Brush your brows downward and draw a light line along the top of your brow line. The Estee Lauder Brow Multi-Brush is a great tool for this.

#9: Apply “Cream to Powder” Eyeshadow

Apply a long-lasting “cream-to-powder” eyeshadow on your lids. Don’t apply the color beyond the end of the eye as it makes your face look tired and accentuates your chin.
MAC’s PRO LONGWEAR PAINT POT comes in several natural colors that can be used alone or with complementary colors. As the name suggests, it stays on all day without stripping the color.

#10: Choosing the right mascara

Since we want our lashes to look voluminous and thick, instead of lengthening and curling mascaras, opt for a volumizing formula.

#11: Try Navy Blue

Use navy blue eyeliner and mascara instead of black, which will make your eyes look whiter.
Great Lash® Royal Blue Washable Mascara from Maybelline is a bestseller that brings a splash of color to all eye colors. It is also very affordable!

#12: Proper use of highlighters and highlighters

Don’t use highlighter as a concealer. Instead, use it on the outer and inner corners of your eyes to brighten your face and make your eyes sparkle. Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat Total Illuminating Concealer is a good one.

#13: Apply blush to the lower part of the face

Use a brush to apply a cream blush, like Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge for Lips and Cheeks, to the apples of your cheeks. Smile to find the right spot. This position is a little lower than you might think, but this technique highlights the eyes more and minimizes wrinkles.

#14: Plump up your lips!

First, apply a bit of highlighter on the top of your lips. Then, apply a natural-colored lip liner, such as M.A.C. Lip Liner, on the outside of your lip line instead of the inside of your lip line. This will make your lips look naturally fuller and your lipstick will last longer.
