I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard “I don’t need a website! I do everything on Facebook” (or Instagram, or Snapchat, or whatever the latest big thing is). People have been saying things like that for years – talk to people who had built huge followings on MySpace or Google Hangouts; two platforms that are basically social media graveyards now.
Here are 9 reasons why every professional should have their own website
1. You own it!
Did you know that once you upload anything to social media, whether it’s a picture, original music, artwork or even just a cool graphic that you created, that you’ve agreed to give that platform the right to use your intellectual property in any way they want!
Don’t believe me? Check out Facebook’s Terms of Service
“For content that is covered by intellectual property rights, like photos and videos (IP content), you specifically give us the following permission, subject to your privacy and application settings: you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, worldwide license to use any IP content that you post on or in connection with Facebook (IP License). This IP License ends when you delete your IP content or your account unless your content has been shared with others, and they have not deleted it.”
Royalty-free worldwide license!! It’s unlikely that Facebook will use your latest amazing makeup work in their next campaign, but you’ve given them permission to do it if they want.
2. You are in control
How often does your favourite social media platform update their terms and conditions? You don’t know what they are going to do in the future – there’s no guarantee that they won’t just shut down tomorrow, and if you don’t have your own site you are putting your entire business efforts into the hands of Mark Zuckerberg or Anthony Noto
When you have your own site you are able to showcase your very best work. If you are applying for a high paid/agency job they aren’t going to want to trawl through your Instagram or Facebook feed to look at your work. In fact, I’d wager that if you apply for a job and haven’t listed your professional site that your application will probably go straight to the bin.
They also won’t want to look at every picture on your feed to see whether it’s your work, or someone else’s work that you’ve liked and shared.
4. It can show your passion and dedication to potential clients or employers
Having a website helps you to demonstrate the passion that you have for your industry and can reassure clients, and potential employers, that you are dedicated and, more importantly, qualified to do their job.
5. Your website becomes your online portfolio.
Being able to direct people to see your best work – be it bridal, editorial or fashion – means that you’ll always be ready if an amazing opportunity comes your way.
6. You can use it to build your personal brand
Instead of being judged on your old status updates, or drunken photo that your BFF posted from last Saturday you can tailor your public persona to tell your best story. Not sure about personal branding? Check out our personal branding blog post
7. You can promote your business or services cheaply
Running your own website is one of the most cost-effective ways of promoting your business. You can potentially reach thousands of people worldwide.
8. You can add content whenever you want
Have a great idea for a new package or business service? You can create an information page or post and have it published straight away.
9. You can use it as a blogging platform
One of the biggest reasons that we blog here at Makeup Freedom is to demonstrate our skills. We love sharing knowledge and building a relationship with our readers and blogging is a fantastic way to do this. If you own your own site AND you know how to update it you can create content whenever you want. It’s no secret that Google loves content. The more you write the higher Google will rank your site.
We are not saying that you absolutely need to become a blogger, but if you want to write an article or two a month it’s a great way to raise your profile.
(And an added bonus: Blogging is also a great way to become more knowledgeable about a subject
If you are going to write about something you’re most likely going to research and learn all about it. This is a great learning strategy, and can help you quickly become the go-to person for your niche)
